Does the religion intrude upon the personal rights of its members? Does it break any laws? Some Native American tribes are allowed to use substances that would otherwise be called “controlled.” That is a lot different than allowing pedophilia or rape (such as in some polygamist compounds, or in the movie).
We live in a country with freedom of religion. If a religion/cult feels that they can best practice their faith away from the mainstream world, they have the right to do it. For example, the Amish live fairly separated from mainstream society. Is it unethical that Christian Scientists avoid doctors? What if it involves children? In my opinion, consenting adults have the right to practice whatever kind of faith/cult/ideals that they like as long as they don’t infringe upon the rights of others. Abusing children is infringing upon the rights of others.
